As an Australian in a relationship with a British citizen, the UK Spouse Visa opens the door to an incredible opportunity: building your future while setting you on the path to the ultimate milestone: British citizenship.

The UK offers a practical pathway to build your life with your British partner together through the UK Spouse visa. Commonly referred to as a “Family visa”, it allows you to live, work and study in the UK with minimal restrictions. More importantly, it’s a stepping stone toward British citizenship, offering long-term benefits for you and your family. Here’s a breakdown of the process, including timelines, costs and the advantages it brings.
What is the UK Spouse visa?
The UK Spouse Visa enables you to join your partner or spouse in the UK if they are a British citizen or hold settled status. Unlike some other visas, it grants substantial flexibility, allowing you to:
- Live and work in the UK without additional permissions.
- Access the UK’s healthcare system.
- Study in the UK without restrictions.
This visa also sets you on the path to indefinite leave to remain (ILR) and, eventually, British citizenship through naturalisation.
The journey to British citizenship
Step 1: Apply for the UK Spouse visa
To start, you’ll need to meet eligibility requirements, including proving you are in a genuine relationship and meeting financial criteria. For the initial application, your British spouse or partner will need to show that they have an income of at least £29,000 or £88,500 in savings. If you are using savings then both you and your British spouse can contribute to this.

A Spouse visa will cost £1,846 if you apply from outside the UK, which has to be done for your initial application. You will also have to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which gives you access to the National Health Service (NHS). The IHS fee is £1,035 for every year your visa is valid, meaning that you will have to pay £3,105 upfront when applying for your Spouse visa.
Your initial visa is valid for two and a half years and you’ll need to apply for an extension of another two and a half years after this period to continue your stay.
Step 2: Apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR)
After five years of living in the UK on a Spouse visa, you can apply for ILR. This status allows you to live permanently in the UK without immigration restrictions. The ILR application fee is £2,885, and you’ll need to pass the “Life in the UK” test as part of the process.
Step 3: British citizenship
Once you hold ILR for 12 months, you will be eligible to apply for British citizenship, provided you meet residency requirements. Citizenship grants you the full rights of a British national, including visa-free travel to many countries, enhanced career opportunities and access to the UK's social security benefits.

The entire journey – from your initial visa to citizenship – takes a minimum of six years, depending on how promptly you meet each milestone.
